This show is simply hot! The whole band is on and plays incredibly powerful, beautiful music. Robert has recovered most of his range it seems, even letting some unearthly screams out in Dazed And Confused and Since I've Been Loving You. Jimmy is a man possessed and the rhythm section plays as if they were the lead instruments too! Highlights from this wholly excellent show include one of the best No Quarter versions ever, an amazing Dazed and the earth shaking Heartbreaker into Whole Lotta Love. Funny, after No Quarter, Plant is interrupted when a girl in the audience throws her phone number onstage. Amidst making a joke about giving it to the security guards.
The tape begins with a brief soundcheck before Rock and Roll crashes into motion. Page and Jones lose track of each other during the guitar solo. Plant is in good voice, belting out each line of Black Dog with power and bravado. As the song ends, he greets the crowd, saying "I was gonna say it's nice to be back, but I don't think we've been here before... I could be wrong." Page blazes through the the guitar solo during Over the Hills and Far Away. He cuts the final verse short, leaving Plant to moan "oh, you really oughta know" during the outro. As the song ends, Plant goes on a long tirade insisting that the crowd be cool and move back or the show cannot continue.
Since I've Been Loving You is incredibly powerful. Page's fingers race across the fretboard in a furious barrage of notes during the intro. The band plays as one entity, rising and falling in unison with every ebb and flow. A fantastic performance, one of the best in recent memory. Before No Quarter, Plant tells the crowd he didn't want to offend anyone with his earlier rant, saying "just to prove it, here's something that we really like to play and we're gonna play really fantastically." The instrumental section is simply outstanding, Jones's haunting melodies slowly build tension until Page's wildly passionate guitar solo explodes across the soundscape. The song has quickly become a major highlight of the show.
Plant finds something on the stage while introducing The Song Remains the Same, joking "I think I'll have to give this to one of the security men." A cut in the tape leaves us near the end of the song. There is another brief cut during the second verse of The Rain Song. Dazed and Confused is introduced as "something that's as old as the hills." The frenzied lead-in to the bow solo gives way to an elegantly heavy San Francisco interlude. Page is absolutely on fire during the guitar solo/workout section, racing frantically through a violent cascade of notes as Bonzo and Jones follow close behind. Unfortunately, the tape is cut just before the call and response with Plant, leaving us at the explosive return to the main riff. Page solos wildly over Bonzo's syncopated heartbeat rhythm during the outro. Another devastating performance.
Stairway to Heaven features an excellent, dynamic guitar solo from Page. Plant belts out the final verse with incredible intensity. Moby Dick is introduced as "somethin' to get off on." The pattern of excellence continues with a blistering Heartbreaker. Page, Jones, and Bonzo get into a high-speed funky jam following the initial verses of Whole Lotta Love. Unfortunately, there is a cut in the tape during the theramin freakout which leaves us near the end of the Boogie Chillen' section. The band closes the show with a terrific The Ocean, one of the best thus far. A truly incredible performance.

Every concert I post will contain a link to download the concert. I use Mega to upload and make available for download. You do not have to install the Mega App to download shows, but I highly recommend it. Especially when downloading the bigger files. It does make things easier. But you can just use your browser. Also, some browsers like Internet Explorer will not let you download. Firefox and Google Chrome work well.
I assure you that all of the links here will be working as long as I'm alive!
If you have any problems at all, just leave a comment and I will help you ASAP. I hope you enjoy! LONG LIVE LED ZEPPELIN!!!

ReplyDeleteQuote - Funny, after No Quarter, Plant is interrupted when a girl in the audience throws her phone number onstage. Amidst making a joke about giving it to the security guards. ---- I was there at this concert, it was not a phone number that was tossed on the stage, it was a huge Cheech and Chong Big Bamboo 1/4 pound Joint. Robert called it EM GUMBA. I finally got to meet Robert Plant at Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Mansfield, MA, USA on July 11, 1990 from the Manic Nirvana Tour and we were a private party of 5 who got to meet and have dinner with him that night. Robert was wearing old high top Converse sneakers and we were riding those Go-Ped Motorized Skateboards backstage. He was the best host. During dinner when we talked about the 1973 Tour I told him about the huge Cheech and Chong Joint someone threw on the stage and he remembered it. He said I was the only person who ever talked to him about that show. He said they should have filed the Movie The Song Remains The Same during The Providence, RI Show and not the New York Show 7 days later.
ReplyDeleteThe Providence, RI Arena was brand new only 6 months old when Led Zep played there and it has seating for 13-15k depending how they do the floor. Another thing we talked about was the dry ice show during No Quarter, the vending company delivered around 20 times more dry ice than they needed and Peter Grant said, "Use it all, we paid for it". I learned this when I told Robert about how much smoke was made from the dry ice. The huge stage fans blew the dry ice cold smoke across the Arena and it acted like instant Air Conditioning, it lowered the temp inside by at least 30 degrees. It was awesome, such a hot night in July and the dry ice show was the best of any Tour Robert said. I told Robert about the large Rubbermaid Trash Containers full of Bud & Heineken Beers. He laughed and said, "Yeah, this is what was on our Rider for refreshments".
They played from exactly 8PM to 11:05PM. Three Hours of non-stop music. No warm-up band for Led Zep. The PA System was really great sounding. Robert told me the night before the Providence, RI Show they played in Boston, and thugs were throwing bottles and stuff on the stage,m he said they walked off very early on July 20, 1973 in Boston. A bottle hit John Bonham's drum kit and he was so mad. I'm so pleased I went to the Providence, RI Show, Robert said it was the best Show of the 1973 Tour, everyone was on that night. I'm so happy we have a recording of the show. I was just 14 when I went to this show, and in 9th grade when I went to school and told my teachers I went to Led Zeppelin this past summer, they were so surprised I got a ticket. All my teachers wanted to go to the show as well. The tickets were issued in late March and sold out in hours. They were 5.50 (Nose-Bleed Seats) 6.50 & 7.50 with a .50 cent surcharge. We had the best seats elevated just above the stage to see everything. It was such a great time to be with Robert in 1990, he still had that young man spirit in him zooming around on Go-Peds back stage. They were 2 stroke and made a lot of smoke. Today he used all electric toys. To be clear, there were dozens of regular joints tossed on the stage at the beginning of the show. But then the huge Cheech and Chong Big Bamboo 1/4 pound joint was hard to miss. For the younger people here, The Cheech and Chong record album came with a massive Zig-Zag type rolling paper to roll a huge joint. Many people bought the album back then just to get the jumbo rolling paper. Robert said they never got high during shows on the 1973 Tour and he even cut back on his cigarettes to keep his voice strong. Robert has the most incredible memory and he can spot a BS'er a mile away. Just wanted to share with you some info from the best show of the 1973 Tour. Robert my favorite all time Front-Man. There is so much more to my relationship with the band, but that's for another chapter.
