Amidst making a joke about giving it to the security guards. ---- I was there at this concert, it was not a phone number that was tossed on the stage, it was a huge Cheech and Chong Big Bamboo 1/4 pound Joint. Robert called it EM GUMBA. I finally got to meet Robert Plant at Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, Mansfield, MA, USA on July 11, 1990 from the Manic Nirvana Tour and we were a private party of 5 who got to meet and have dinner with him that night. Robert was wearing old high top Converse sneakers and we were riding those Go-Ped Motorized Skateboards backstage. He was the best host. During dinner when we talked about the 1973 Tour I told him about the huge Cheech and Chong Joint someone threw on the stage and he remembered it. He said I was the only person who ever talked to him about that show. He said they should have filed the Movie The Song Remains The Same during The Providence, RI Show and not the New York Show 7 days later.
The Providence, RI Arena was brand new only 6 months old when Led Zep played there and it has seating for 13-15k depending how they do the floor. Another thing we talked about was the dry ice show during No Quarter, the vending company delivered around 20 times more dry ice than they needed and Peter Grant said, "Use it all, we paid for it". I learned this when I told Robert about how much smoke was made from the dry ice. The huge stage fans blew the dry ice cold smoke across the Arena and it acted like instant Air Conditioning, it lowered the temp inside by at least 30 degrees. It was awesome, such a hot night in July and the dry ice show was the best of any Tour Robert said. I told Robert about the large Rubbermaid Trash Containers full of Bud & Heineken Beers. He laughed and said, "Yeah, this is what was on our Rider for refreshments".
They played from exactly 8PM to 11:05PM. Three Hours of non-stop music. No warm-up band for Led Zep. The PA System was really great sounding. Robert told me the night before the Providence, RI Show they played in Boston, and thugs were throwing bottles and stuff on the stage,m he said they walked off very early on July 20, 1973 in Boston. A bottle hit John Bonham's drum kit and he was so mad. I'm so pleased I went to the Providence, RI Show, Robert said it was the best Show of the 1973 Tour, everyone was on that night. I'm so happy we have a recording of the show. I was just 14 when I went to this show, and in 9th grade when I went to school and told my teachers I went to Led Zeppelin this past summer, they were so surprised I got a ticket. All my teachers wanted to go to the show as well. The tickets were issued in late March and sold out in hours. They were 5.50 (Nose-Bleed Seats) 6.50 & 7.50 with a .50 cent surcharge. We had the best seats elevated just above the stage to see everything. It was such a great time to be with Robert in 1990, he still had that young man spirit in him zooming around on Go-Peds back stage. They were 2 stroke and made a lot of smoke. Today he used all electric toys. To be clear, there were dozens of regular joints tossed on the stage at the beginning of the show. But then the huge Cheech and Chong Big Bamboo 1/4 pound joint was hard to miss. For the younger people here, The Cheech and Chong record album came with a massive Zig-Zag type rolling paper to roll a huge joint. Many people bought the album back then just to get the jumbo rolling paper. Robert said they never got high during shows on the 1973 Tour and he even cut back on his cigarettes to keep his voice strong. Robert has the most incredible memory and he can spot a BS'er a mile away. Just wanted to share with you some info from the best show of the 1973 Tour. Robert my favorite all time Front-Man. There is so much more to my relationship with the band, but that's for another chapter.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6565422079641005783.post-69413507848686824562019-03-24T18:34:27.546-07:002019-03-24T18:34:27.546-07:00All links work now!
